Visiting the Alhambra is one of the most magical experiences in Spain. It is an incredibly beautiful place, rich in history, but also one of the most visited. Therefore, good planning is key. Here is everything you need to know.

What you will see in the Alhambra

The Alhambra is not just a palace: it is a fortified city (medina) with essential spaces.

Nasrid Palaces

The heart and the jewel. Court of the Lions, Hall of the Ambassadors, unique plasterwork, and tiles.
strict entry time

Alcazaba

The oldest fortress. From the Watchtower (Torre de la Vela), you get the best panoramic views of Granada and the Albaicín.

Generalife

Gardens and leisure estate of the Nasrid kings. Fountains, courtyards, and orchards; spectacular in spring.

Palace of Charles V

Imposing circular Renaissance building. Free access; it houses two museums.

Best time to visit

Spring (April-May) and Autumn (Sept-Oct). Pleasant weather and beautiful Generalife gardens.

Summer: Apr 1st to Oct 14th, 8:30 AM – 8:00 PM. Very hot; better to visit early or take a night tour.

Tips and advice for your visit

  • Be punctual for the Nasrid Palaces: you have an assigned time and only a 30-minute window. If you arrive late, you will miss them.
  • Carry your tickets and original ID/Passport.
  • Organize the route: 2:30 to 4 full hours. Start at the Alcazaba, then the Palaces at your scheduled time, and finish at the Generalife (or vice versa). The entire visit depends on the time assigned to the Nasrid Palaces on your ticket.
  • Comfortable footwear: steep slopes and cobbled floors.
  • Free areas: Palace of Charles V and its museums (Alhambra Museum and Fine Arts), Plaza de los Aljibes. Also, the view from the San Nicolás viewpoint in the Albaicín is magical and free.
  • Carry water and sunscreen in summer; in winter, wear layers and, of course, always bring your camera.
